So I finally bought a house on the westside with a yard for a dog. And I rescued a cat.

I can always add the dog later. After I put in new grass and a doggie door. Then I heard raccoons and other wily creatures come in those things in the middle of the night. And the cat might sneak out the doggie door. And dogs are a lot of work, you have to race home after work instead of going to happy hour, to walk them. Oh and you can’t go out of town and leave them for even a day. What the hell was I thinking, Mr Whiskers practically takes care of himself. He might be the perfect man for me.

Though our state is broke he’s signing off on a 10k tax credit for home buyers like me.

The 8k federal credit ends april 30th so it’s looking likely that I won’t make it. Unless I find another swell house fast and can outbid the other bastards. Of course eight thousand isn’t enough to jump into a house I don’t love, but I did feel the pressure. Yay, the new bigger, better credit begins may 1st. Sorry to my real estate agent #5, let’s take our time and qualify for 2k more.

How did I live without Navi?

It actually has changed my life, and how many things can you say that about. My mom gave it to me for Christmas, and I’ve named her Victoria cause she sounds so formal when she tells me to turn left.

Leaving friends downtown to go home late at night, no problem. I almost didn’t even look at the freeway signs whizzing by, and just made a snap decision to get in the lane Vicky told me to. Getting on the wrong freeway or going the wrong direction, that’s an icky mistake to correct. But with Navi, I realized the worst that could happen, she would just recalculate to turn me back towards Santa Monica.

Maybe I didn’t realize before, driving alone at night in an unfamiliar area can be spooky. But not anymore. And no need to ask strangers “where the hell am I or how do I find the 405?” These days I feel powerful. Not quite I’ve-got-a-gun-in-here-power, but pretty close.

I wanna be a Derby doll

I’d been wanting to see these roller derby gals forever and I finally just did.

It was a blast. Fast paced and exciting, you couldn’t help but get all loud and crazy. In a big old warehouse in Silver Lake, Tecate in a can for 5$ is the refreshment of choice. Love that. No fancy pants allowed. These skater girls and everyone working are all volunteers, no one is doin it for the money. How great is that.

If you haven’t been, you’ve gotta check it out. The crowd was an endearing mix of older Nascar types and youngish cool kids. During intermission there’s a band, snacks and cool stuff to buy from skull-oriented vendors, cause a girl can never have too much spider jewelry. I can’t wait to go again and I’m not even sure of all the rules, but it was surprisingly official and shit. It made me wanna learn how to skate again and yell at some bitches to get outta my way.

The Leaf, an electric car with zero emissions is finally here.

Ok, I’m biased since we’ve been working on it for months. It is cool to be involved with a brand new car, and one that I’d love to drive. We all just saw it in person yesterday at an event and I still love it. The last new car I loved working on and then saw in person, um, well, I’m not driving it.

Who cares that the Leaf only gets 100 miles per charge? And that I have to lease the battery? And that I’ll need to charge every night after my 60-mile a day commute, or move. I like it and I want to buy one. It’s roomier inside than it looks and the idea behind it is a good one.

Or maybe I’m just falling for the advertising? Confession: we spent half a tank of gas to get down to Irvine and check it out. Saving the planet is not gonna be easy.

I love a good wig

Every Halloween I get my 9$ Sav-on hair out of the closet and I’m good to go.

This year I wore it to the office on friday, to dinner after and to a dinner party on Halloween. It’s both ugly and ridiculous, so of course I love it. Wearing a wig means you’re someone different. In this case, a hideous old lady with a big grey rats nest.

But there’s a weird sort of freedom it gives you, you’re in costume and there are no consequences. I get to say anything and blame it on the wig. So I can see why women have different hair just for fun and special occasions. I’m thinking about buying a new one, but fab and sassy, for my Thanksgiving trip home to Austin.

There’s gotta be a wig shop near here.

Let’s name your baby

I may not know much about babies, but I have great taste in naming them.

My office mate is due in February with her second girl. She’s been talking about names and ruling them in and out. She likes to pick a name in advance, then stick with it. Her first daughter is Maya, chosen when she was only 4 months along.

I suggested Ava last week and she liked it but wasn’t sure. Turns out I was right. Her husband loves it, it sounds great with their last name that she doesn’t want me to tell you, so you’ll just have to trust me. I named her baby.

Not that it was a competition…but I do like to win!!

Maybe I’m just not that into him

I mean he’s a fox and all, but he’s kinda needy.

I finally got to meet my sweet little nephew. My sister and her husband brought him to LA last week. He’s happy and easy to love. A “good” baby my mom calls him. But still.

We had to eat dinner at 6 pm. And stop for naps. And boobs. He didn’t like the car seat after 27 minutes so we couldn’t go too far. This little guy is already used to life in Austin, where everything is less than 26 minutes away. And he’s not into walking yet, so the stroller has to come along everywhere. There sure is a lot of stuff needed for every minute of a baby-day, I had no idea. He’s adorable, of course. But sheesh, I’m pretty sure I’m just not cut out for it.

Though it does feel like everyone I know either has one or wants one. Babies are so the right accessory these days. Think I’ll start with a dog.

A porcelain reusable cup for coffee whores.

Most of us recycle, use cloth shopping bags and own water bottles. But then go and throw away a cup or two each day. Now you can stop.

My friend DJ just got hers at a coffee shop in Venice for 22$. Yes, it can go in the microwave too. I don’t even drink coffee and want one. It’s made by DCI but their site says they are sold out, they are catching on. So here’s another place to get one:
